Jan Pax Quartet
Jan Prax is one of Europe's most dynamic and distinctive saxophonists. His musical career began unusually: Starting out as a piano prodigy, he soon found his real voice in jazz and improvised music. It is precisely this “second home” that you still hear today — in a game that is precise, courageous and emotionally direct at the same time.
With his quartet, Prax won renowned awards such as the Sparda Jazz Award and the Made in NY Jazz Competition. On his albums — including Keepin' A Style Alive, Ascending and Head to the Sky — he combines a strong jazz language with modern intensity. It is never about stylistic effects, but about attitude: about energy, about depth, about a clear, personal narrative. Influences from important stages can be heard without defining him — such as his time as protégé by David Sanborn or cross-genre collaborations, including with hip-hop artists such as Xatar.
At the same time, Prax also moves confidently in classical contexts, for example with interpretations such as Glazunov's Saxophone Concerto. This spectrum makes his concerts so exciting: This is where fire and finesse meet, structure and risk, elegance and urgency. Anyone who experiences Jan Prax live does not hear a “saxophonist”, but a highly recognizable voice.
